O'Grady's father is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised by her parents in Wheaton within Illinois and then graduated in 1981 with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. The model appeared in commercials for some time prior to moving in Los Angeles. O'Grady made her debut in the industry by modeling for Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy, She's Having a Baby and was later cast as a recurring role in the ABC Drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. The other appearances she made on the guest list included programs for TV in independent film, as well as many other shows.
