O'Neil was a contestant on Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while at high school. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 because of the judges' enthusiasm in her performance. O'Neil was given high marks by the panel of judges. She suffered massive losses during the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed on the third row, followed by the second place. It was a shock to the judges and they recommended that the public vote for Melissa who was the contestant with the best ability to sing. O'Neil's performances were so good that she was never in the third place in the future. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced to the final two in the contest. Werner said that in the morning, papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
